The Different Types of Anabolic Steroids

Whether in nature (plants, animals, fungi or insects) or in our bodies, there are an incredible number of steroids. steroids correspond to organic compounds whose basic chemical structure consists of a succession of four cycloalkane rings, connected one or the other. The rings (A, B and C) are organized in 20 carbon atoms, while the ring D has only five carbon atoms. Then, the steroids will be differentiated by changes in their functional structure or by changes such as the removal or addition of a hydrogen atom, carbon or oxygen. The different possible combinations then create steroids with their own characteristics and functionality.
The human body synthesizes a multitude of steroids. Among the most important: cholesterol, estrogens, vitamin D et Testosterone. Even though Cholesterol is the basis of the other three, in the case of our discovery anabolic steroids, we will therefore focus more particularly on Testosterone.
Indeed, Testosterone known as the male sex hormone par excellence is the first anabolic steroid, manufactured by the human body. In addition to promoting the masculine gender (hairiness, serious voice ..), testosterone stimulates the growth of muscle tissue. It is therefore well known in the world of bodybuilding and bodybuilding, to develop muscle mass.
However, testosterone is not the only anabolic steroid. Indeed, two other less well-known anabolic steroids are also produced androgenically by the body. It is la dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and Nandrolone.
Dihydrotestosterone, Nandrolone and Testosterone thus represent the three parenting anabolic hormones, naturally produced by the body, which will be used by science for the development of their derivatives and thus arrive at a multitude of anabolic supplements offered on the market.
In the very large family of anabolics, three major types of steroids :
- Testosterone analogues
- The analogs of Dihydrotestosterone
- The analogues of Nandrolone
On the discovery of Testosterone derivatives:
Testosterone is the original and primary anabolic steroid, a precursor of DHT and Nandrolone. Indeed, DHT is a metabolite of Testosterone and Nandrolone is derived from the conversion of Testosterone to estrogen. Thereby, all anabolic steroids can be considered as testosterone derivatives. However, some steroids correspond to direct derivatives of Testosterone, with its main characteristics. These include Dianabol and Bolderone.
The derivatives possess the main characteristics of Testosterone, to know :
- They become oestrogens
- They interact with 5 alpha reductase, causing their reduction to a more powerful androgen
- Testosterone is reduced to Dihydrotestosterone, while Dianabol is reduced to Dihydromethandrostenolone and Boldenone to Dihydrolboldenone.
Dianabol is obtained by adding on the structure of the Testosterone, a methyl group, attached to the carbon 17-alpha. This process called C17-Alpha Alkylation, therefore transforms testosterone into a derivative that will be assimilated orally, while maintaining a strong anabolic effect in the body and this despite its passage through the liver.
The birth of Dianabol has thus made it possible to obtain an oral form of Testosterone, particularly suitable for beginners, recalcitrant to injectable forms. Dianabol also has a double bond between 1 carbon and 2 carbon, allowing to increase its anabolic resistance while decreasing its androgen resistance.
Bolderone, for its part, corresponds to Dianabol without the methyl group attached to the 17-alpha carbon. It has however, like the Dianabol, the double bond between the 1 and 2 carbons, giving it a low estrogenic activity in the body.
Testosterone derivatives are appreciated for their important results on the volume of muscle mass, accentuated by the retention of water. It goes without saying that these derivatives are not recommended in dry periods, but rather in terms of mass gain.
Discovering Dihydrotestosterone derivatives:
La Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is obtained by metabolism of Testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5AR). Dihydrotestosterone has two peculiarities.
The first feature of the DHT is that,it can not by any means turn into estrogens since it is simply unable to interact with the aromatase enzyme.
Its second peculiarity, which is rather surprising, is the fact that DHT in it does not exert any action on the muscular tissues. Indeed, as soon as it arrives in the muscle tissue, it is immediately deactivated and metabolized into two ineffective hormones: 3-Alpha Androstanediol and 3-Beta Androstanediol. This metabolism is carried out thanks to the enzyme 3-hydroxysteroid. So, if DHT does not have any anabolic muscle activity why look to create derivatives of this steroid? Logic at first sight. But the reality is a little more complex. Indeed, if the DHT has no action on muscle tissue, it is because of the enzyme 3-hydroxysteroid. If this enzyme did not exist, DHT would prove to be a powerful anabolic.
The challenge is therefore to create derivatives of DHT incapable of interacting with this enzyme, in order to benefit from all the anabolic power of DHT.
Although its derivatives use DHT as a basic model of chemical structure, each derivative has its characteristics and therefore its own actions:

Nevertheless, here are the main features of DHT derivatives:
- No interaction with aromatase enzyme. DHT derivatives therefore have no estrogenic activity (with the exception of Winstrol, where its metabolites act as estrogens).

Discovering derivatives of Nandrolone:
Nandrolone is obtained during flavoring, ie during the conversion of the Testosterone in estrogens. Its chemical structure is quite similar to that of Testosterone. However, its difference lies in the absence of the 19e carbon. Indeed, it lacks a carbon atom at the 19e position. The Nandrolone and its only derivative, the Trenbolone, are often referred to as 19-nortestosterone (19-NOR).
This absence of the 19e carbon fiber gives Nandrolone increased resistance to the action of the enzyme aromatase. Thus, it becomes ultra resistant to any estrogenic activity.
Concerning Trenbolone, the latter has undergone a modification in the 11 and 19 carbons, thus making it completely hermetic to aromatase. In addition it has a strong anabolic power.
Two forms of use of anabolic steroids:
From this range of anabolic supplements, two forms of assimilation are now available: the injectable route and the oral route.
Oral steroids are in the form of cachets or capsules. They are then swallowed and then digested by the body, during the cure.
The oral form will take longer than the injectable form to be assimilated by the body. Indeed, the steroid will then go through the liver and kidneys to be filtered and finally assimilated by the body.
Oral steroids can then cause damage directly to the liver and kidneys, since these two organs are not accustomed to absorb this kind of substance. It is therefore appropriate to take protections during the course of treatment, in order to protect the liver from the steroids Oral.
However, oral steroids are most often used by beginners afraid of the injectable form. They are also taken as preparation of the body for a future injectable cure.
